Preface
I want to thank you for taking the time to attend the 2010 AMIA Annual Symposium, the premier venue for the exchange of ideas in informatics.
The opportunity for informatics to contribute to improvements in health has never been greater. Government programs have created incentives for physicians and hospitals to adopt electronic health records. Also, as the amount of available electronic clinical data is increasing, computational techniques are being developed to mine data for knowledge, parse nature language for coded concepts, and combine genetic data with phenotypic data. However, there are many questions for the informatics community to grapple with, including: how to implement EHRs effectively and safely, how to evolve EHRs over time so even greater benefits can be realized, how to develop an adequate informatics workforce for the nation, how to support comparative effectiveness and other kinds of research and how to best apply the techniques of computer science to the vast amounts of available electronic data. This year’s Symposium includes 192 papers, 29 panels, 10 demonstrations, 4 partnerships, 11 workshops, 30 tutorials and 10 invited sessions that cover work in both the applied and foundational aspects of informatics.
We are privileged to have two keynote speakers at this conference. Susan Dentzer is the Editor-in-Chief of Health Affairs, the nation’s foremost health policy journal, and a past health correspondent for the McNeil-Lehrer News Hour. Ms. Dentzer will share her insights regarding important national and international health policy challenges and ways that informatics can help address those problems. David Blumenthal, MD, is the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology. His office is overseeing the development of the “meaningful use” policy that guides the incentive funding for EHRs in the United States, as well as programs to support EHR adoption, informatics research and development, and informatics workforce development. Dr. Blumenthal’s comments will give us an insight into future directions of the government programs and the ways that informatics can play a role.
In addition to the submitted content and the keynote speakers, the Symposium also features invited sessions on a variety of topics including the relationship of computer science to informatics, the ONC SHARP research and development program, the relevance of informatics to CMIOs, nursing informatics to support the continuum of care, global health informatics, as well as the ever-popular Informatics Year in Review.
This year, for the first time, the conference proceedings will be available online and will even be available in advance of the conference.
I want to thank the 30 members of this year’s Scientific Program Committee who helped oversee the editorial review process that created the Symposium’s submitted content. And I want to thank the two Track Chairs, Carol Friedman and Dean Sittig, who helped me admirably with the planning of the Symposium. I also want to thank the AMIA staff, especially the AMIA VP for Education, Jeff Williamson, for supporting the committee and bringing the Symposium to fruition.
Most of all I want to express my appreciation to the 504 reviewers who reviewed and made comments on the submitted content. The quality of the Symposium is directly related to the quality of the work done by the reviewers, so I gratefully recognize their efforts.
I wish you a successful conference and hope you find information that will bring benefit to your organization and your community.
Gil Kuperman
